Dad killed after standing in front of a train in Ferring

A FATHER-OF-FOUR wrote a suicide note before standing in front of a speeding train in Ferring, an inquest heard.

Ben Lay, 37, of Roundstone Drive, East Preston, died after he was hit by a train on Wednesday, July 13, after standing on the line near the Ferring footbridge connecting Langbury Lane with Onslow Close.

At an inquest in Worthing Magistrates’ Court today (Thursday, October 20), assistant deputy coroner Christopher Wilkinson heard how Mr Lay was upset following the break-up of his relationship with the mum of his fourth child.

Trainee train driver Aaron Payne was driving the train when the incident happened and described how he saw Mr Lay standing on the rails looking at the train before turning his back to it and raising his arms.

Mr Wilkinson recorded a verdict that Mr Lay took his own life.
