AN ELDERLY woman had her purse stolen after being targeted by a distraction burglar who said he was her new neighbour.
The 86-year-old victim answered the door at around 2.30pm on Friday afternoon (January 28) to a man claiming to have recently moved in near to her home in South Farm Road, close to Broadwater Green. Police said he made a point of showing her a sold sign on a nearby house and called himself ‘Martin’.
He said he had a problem with his drains and wanted to check the drains in the woman’s rear garden to see if they were blocked. He then asked her for some money before becoming angry and snatched her purse.
Detective Sergeant Simon Dunn said: “This is a particularly callous and cold attack on an elderly lady. Fortunately, she was able to provide us with a good description and if you were in the area at the time and remember seeing anything suspicious, please contact us immediately.”
The suspect is described as white, 5ft 7in tall, aged 40 to 50 and of medium build with fairish or greying hair swept back. His bottom front teeth were missing.
Police are conducting house-to-house enquiries in the area.
