AN elderly woman was the victim of a distraction burglary in Goring on Thursday (May 12).
At around 3.30pm, the 80-year-old woman, of Limbrick Lane, opened the door to a man claiming he was there to do work in her back garden.
She let him in, thinking he was the gardener, and after a few hours he asked her for £30, which she gave him.
He then asked to use her upstairs toilet, and left the house. It was then the victim discovered he had stolen an undisclosed amount of cash from a bedroom drawer.
Police are appealing for witnesses, or anybody who may have come across the man, who is described as being white with a southern accent, to come forward.
Sergeant Alex Lowe, from West Sussex CID, said: “This was a very distressing experience for the elderly victim. I would like to remind home owners to please be aware of callers purporting to be gardeners.
“Never let anyone into your home without checking their identity and if you are unsure, ask them to leave.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 quoting serial 1114 of 12/5.
