Extra police patrols as Southwater 999 is down

A power outage at a BT Group telephone exchange has meant that homes and businesses in some areas of Southwater cannot dial 999 today (Tuesday April 23).

The disruption is to about 1,500 telephone lines starting with the numbers 01403 73 or 82.

Insp Mark Hammond, of Sussex Police, said: “Work is currently being undertaken to restore service to everyone as soon as possible. We have been liaising with other emergency services and the BT Group.

“If you have a serious emergency you should call 999 from your mobile phone, dial 101 or flag down extra police patrols in the area. You can also go to your nearest police station, hospital or fire station to report the emergency.”

Services are expected to be back to normal before 3pm.
