Over the last month there have been sentencings for a despicable, unprovoked murder, a second drug-related homicide and a tragic reminder of what can happen if we switch off while driving for even a second.
5. Stephen Burns
Fifty-six-year-old Stephen Burns, of Lennox Street in Brighton, was on trial alongside Daniel Macleod and Abdi Dahir after being charged with assisting Macleod on the murder of Abdul Deghayes. Abdul was stabbed eight times in the legs, buttocks and back on February 16 in 2019. Burns was found not guilty of assisting Macleod, but did plead guilty to conspiring to supply Class A and B drugs and was jailed for 34 months.
6. Abdi Dahir
The murder of Abdul Deghayes ultimately resulted in the sentencing of three men. Alongside Abdul's murderer Daniel Macleod and drug dealer Stephen Burns, 25-year-old Abdi Dahir was also jailed for 50 months after pleading guilty to conspiring to supply Class A and B drugs. Dahir's offences came to light during the investigation into Abdul's murder.

Twenty-one-year-old Zakaria Yanaouri, of Congreve Road in Worthing, was jailed at the Old Bailey on November 23 after admitting five counts of possessing material likely to be of use to a person committing, or preparing, an act of terrorism. Yanaouri was arrested in a planned operation at his home on February 24 and was found with Isis propaganda, including extremist publications. Searches on his digital devices also found videos of executions, images of jihadi fighters and audio files of pro-Isis, or Daesh, music. He was jailed for 32 months, having seen his five-year sentence reduced for a guilty plea. A serious crime prevention order will also be in place for five yeras to disrupt him from future online terrorist activity. Detective Chief Superintendent Kath Barnes, Head of counter terrorism police in the South East, said: “There is no doubt that Yanaouri’s mind-set is that of someone who had come under the influence of the warped ideology of Daesh."

Ronald Dossett, 75, was jailed on Friday (November 27), for causing a crash in Angmering that resulted in the death of a Findon mother. Nicola Drummond, 44, died and her two children sustained serious injuries on January 17, 2019, when Dossett's car veered onto the opposite side of the A280 and collided head-on with Nicola's. A third vehicle also collided with Dossett's, injuring the driver. Dossett was seriously injured and his wife, 75, had minor injuries. Dossett was jailed for 12 months and disqualified from driving for 30 months. He had pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving. Judge Christie Laing QC described Mrs Drummond as an 'extraordinary woman' whose last words when trapped in her car were for her two children to be taken care of before her. Judge Laing said Dossett either fell asleep or was so distracted he did not try to avoid the collision. Dossett said he did not remember what happened and struggled to come to terms with it being his fault, which he now accepted.
