The driver, a 27-year-old man from Brighton, was not seriously injured but was taken to hospital as a precaution, confirmed the spokesperson.

Detective Constable Matt King said: “We do not believe there were any other vehicles involved and would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened before the car left the road.

“It’s a fairly busy street and it would have still been light outside.

“If you have any information at all, no matter how insignificant you may think it is, then please get in touch.”
