Police arrest man after Worthing town centre helicopter chase

A DRAMATIC town centre helicopter pursuit resulted in an arrest of a man in connection with an attempted robbery at a property in West Chiltington.

Police are appealing for witnesses in relation to the incident which happened (today) Saturday afternoon at 3.45pm, when the home owner returned to disturb an intruder.

The suspect then fled the scene in a blue Mini Cooper car and drove down the A24 and into Worthing Town centre, abandoning the 07 plate vehicle at the NCP Guildbourne car park.

Crowds gathered as more than a dozen officers attended the scene, including specialist forensic and dog units, with an arrest being made shortly afterwards.

One town centre observer, Alex Cockburn said: “It looked like most of the police from Worthing station appeared at the Guildbourne car park with the police helicopter there as well. They ascended up the car park and at times there was some frantic activity. I’ve never seen so many police there for anything.”

A senior police spokesperson said: “There are a number of lines of enquiry for this incident including CCTV. The Mini Cooper used by the suspect was found by police and the man has been arrested. If anyone has any information witnessing the car travelling towards Worthing this afternoon, or anyone leaving the car or throwing anything from the vehicle please contact us.”
