Police community support officers have been monitoring activity in Tarring park this week following news that a four-year-old girl stumbled across a pile of syringes and other drugs paraphernalia at the site.

Mother Louise Humphrey was left ‘angry and saddened’ after her daughter stumbled across the drug equipment while playing hide and seek in the park on Monday (October 1).

A police spokesman said in a post on social media: “Our PCSOs have spent time at Tarring Park this week, keeping an eye on behaviour in the area.

“We’re aware drug equipment was found in the park a few days ago.

“Officers will continue to monitor activity so that this small minority don’t ruin others enjoyment.

“Worthing Borough Council has responsibility re drug litter and are aware of the find.

“They map any drug litter and work with Police to target locations where it is being regularly discarded.

“If you witness any suspicious activity, like drug taking, please dial 999.”

Tarring ward councillor Bob Smytherman said earlier this week that he feared incidents of drug taking in the park were on the rise.

He said: “Over the last few months drug-taking and dealing has been prominent in a number of parts of Tarring and I would encourage anyone witnessing any suspicious activity to dial 999 if it’s safe to do so, or alternatively after the event on 101 to enable police to get a picture of the seriousness of the offending.

“We are hoping to have a police presence at the next Tarring Community Forum on October 9 at 7pm at West Worthing Baptist Church, where everyone is welcome.”
