Chief Constable Martin Richards said: “It can be challenging but many people say that being a Special Constable is one of the most rewarding things they have ever done.

“In the last six months, local volunteers have shown their enthusiasm for the role by devoting more than 40,000 hours to supporting policing teams in Sussex. The whole community benefits from their unstinting efforts as the Special Constabulary is very much about putting local people at the heart of policing. By applying to join the team you will build on the success achieved so far.”

Training will include learning about the police service and the duties of a police officer, powers of arrest and common crimes, how to prepare evidence for court self-defence and how to deal with awkward situations or people.

Chief Superintendent Graham Bartlett, lead officer for specials, volunteers and cadets said: “Not only are we increasing the number of Specials but we are also changing the way we use them so that following training and some experience on the streets you will have the opportunity to work with different departments and undertake some specialised training. We are very keen to attract high quality people from right across Sussex to help us keep our wonderful counties safe.”
