SCOUTS in Goring were left devastated just before Christmas, when they discovered their headquarters had been broken into.

Vandals smashed their way into 2nd Goring Scout Group’s headquarters, in Wavertree Road, Maybridge.

The damage was found by Alan Greenyer, trustee and treasurer, who went there to read the electricity meter.

Alan said: “It’s absolutely disgusting this has happened, particularly at this time of year.

“We all work so hard to provide for the youth of this area and to think someone can come along and create such misery is appalling.”

The vandals got in between 6pm on Wednesday, December 23 and 10am on Thursday, December 24, but it is not know how, as the premises can be accessed only via a 10ft bolted gate, which showed no sign of a break-in.

Alan was unsure if anything was stolen, as the group’s leaders were all away over Christmas, so a stock check could not be taken. The hut is used to store camping and activities equipment.

Alan said the £500 to £900 cost of repair was “just money down the drain”.

The Scout group is currently trying to raise £90,000 for a new headquarters.

Sussex Police is appealing for witnesses to call 0845 6070999.
