Worthing machete incident: two victims found by police

Two people were taken to hospital following an incident involving a machete on Monday.

Police were called after the large blade, caked in blood, was discovered wedged in a recycling bin outside a block of flats in Victoria Road, Worthing, on July 20.

Sussex Police said it was initially called to Elizabeth Road shortly after 2.45pm when a member of the public raised the alarm, but officers quickly established that Victoria Road nearby was the scene of the incident.

Yesterday, a spokesman said a person arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a knife/bladed article in a public place had been released on condiitional bail until August 18.

A resident of the block of flats, who wished to remain anonymous, said they heard banging and crashing from somewhere in the building around the time of the incident.

“For a moment I initially thought that something had blown up, so I looked outside the window expecting to see billowing smoke,” they said.

They added that the communal areas of the building were covered in droplets of blood. They said: “I was panicking, my legs were shaking. My whole body was absolutely shaking. I was in a panic mode. You never imagine from one moment to another to end up living near a crime scene.”

They added that the incident had made them consider moving.

Initially, police were searching for anyone injured in the incident and issued an appeal for them to come forward.

On Tuesday, a police spokesman said that two victims had been identified, who suffered hand injuries that needed hospital treatment.
