Worthing man found guilty of starving his dogs

A Worthing man has been fined and sentenced to community service after his two dogs were found '˜starved'.

On Monday, January 18, Shaun Peckham, of Anscombe Close, pleaded guilty to charges under Section 9 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 at Worthing Magistrates Court.

Two dogs were found on the morning of December 12 2014 on Wallace Avenue, Worthing. The dogs – a Rottweiler called Kaiser and a Labrador called Biscuit – were found by two separate members of the public.

Neither dog had any identification, nor were tagged or chipped, and both dogs were starved.

The Defendant admitted he was responsible for the dogs but said they had been stolen from the property on December 4 2014, eight days before they were found.

The Council received information on February 2 2015 from the Royal Veterinary College that the dogs could have not got into that condition within 8 days and must have been starved for some time.

Two other dogs were found at Mr Peckham’s property but they were in a healthy condition.

The Court ordered that Mr Peckham complete a 12 month community order of 150 hours of unpaid work, disqualified him from keeping any pets for 5 years (suspended for 3 months) and pay all costs, totalling £3,296.00.

Also, that the two other dogs at Mr Peckham’s property be removed from the family home within three months.

Adur & Worthing Councils Dogs Wardens and Legal department have celebrated the successful prosecution of a local dog owner.

Councillor Clive Roberts, executive member for environment, Worthing District Council said: “Cruelty to animals will not be tolerated in Worthing and I congratulate the Council’s Dog Warden team for their hard work in bringing this clear case of failure to care to court and for our legal team in bringing this prosecution.

“The Council’s staff will report any known acts of animal cruelty in the district and will not hesitate in bringing other pet owners, who fail to care for their pets, to court.”
