A 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with assault by beating an emergency worker. He will appear at Worthing Youth Court on December 31, police added.

According to police, a number of other young people were abusive towards officers, who gave words of advice.

They were also reminded of their responsibility to adhere to social distancing guidelines, with groups now restricted to no more than six in a bid to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Sussex Police has said it will engage, explain and encourage before resorting to legal enforcement of the guidelines.

Chief Inspector Sarah Leadbeatter, District Commander, said: "We remain committed to tackling youth related violence across our district and my teams take any reports of young people carrying weapons very seriously.

"We therefore won’t hesitate to take appropriate action to remove those weapons from the streets and safeguard young people and the wider community."
