Worthing woman in court after death crash

A GORING driver who killed an elderly man after knocking him over has been disqualified from driving.

Joanna Hand, 38, of Ardingly Drive, Goring-By-Sea, has been found guilty of causing death by careless driving after appearing at Chichester Crown Court yesterday (Wednesday, March 2, 2011).

Hand was driving a Ford Fiesta on Tarring Road, Worthing, just outside West Worthing railway station at around 5.17pm on Friday, September 18 2009, when she knocked over 90-year-old Robert Cade from Canterbury Road, Worthing.

The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was taken to Worthing Hospital by ambulance, where he sadly died.

On Wednesday, Hand was disqualified from driving for two years and given a curfew from 9pm to 5am for the next five months.

She has been ordered to pay £230 costs.

After the sentencing, Inspector Neil Walker said: “Although 90 years of age, Robert was a very active man and his death has been very traumatic for his immediate family.

“They are pleased with the findings of the jury and I hope they can now try to move on with their lives.”
