Worthing woman sentenced for failing to declare payments into bank account

A WORTHING woman has been given a conditional discharge after failing to tell the council of payments into an undeclared bank account.

Sarah Jane Alp, 26, of Boxgrove, Goring, was found guilty at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (May 3) for failing to notify a change of circumstance, in relation to housing and council tax benefit claims with Worthing Borough Council.

Alp failed to declare a bank account into which substantial and regular payments were made, and, therefore, didn’t declare this income.

On sentencing, chairman of the bench Brian Rigby said: “When you started giving your evidence you did state you were a person of some intelligence. You did not declare that you continued to hold the HSBC account in the claim form in December, 2010, nor did you declare that you were receiving money on a regular basis. It is too convenient.”

The magistrates sentenced Alp to a 12-month conditional discharge, and ordered her to pay prosecution costs of £200.
