Worthing's town centre was given a boost as a Christmas market marked the beginning of the festive shopping period.

Shoppers came in their droves to the event, which took place on Saturday and Sunday in Montague Place and Montague Street.

While they browsed the varied stalls, shoppers were entertained by South Coast Harmony Choir, the Salvation Army band and dozens of performers from the Storm youth group, who performed a festive flash mob to Shakin’ Stevens.

Children were entertained by characters from Frozen, and on Sunday the crocodile from the Peter Pan pantomime at the Pavilion Theatre was out and about to meet and greet revellers.

Pete Fijalkowski, market manager, said: “We also had young singers and performers from the Worthing area who sang Christmas songs, which was really good to support the local musicians and artists.

“We had 1,000 helium balloons which were given out to the kids, which gives a lot of cheer. It is amazing the happiness that a small red balloon can give. There was a really nice atmosphere.

“There was a lot going on, which is getting Worthing started towards Christmas.”

Mr Fijalkowski added that Montague Place, which was renovated this year, made the event more attractive to shoppers.

“For most of this year, it has been a building site. The way it has been resculpted lends itself more to our event; it is more open.”
