Inspector Stewart Goodwin said: “At 11.30am there was a collision between two pedal cyclists on the cycle path, resulting in one man being airlifted to hospital with a serious, life-threatening head injury.

“We are appealing for witnesses, particularly two males that stopped at the scene in a van.

“They are described as carpet fitters and offered first aid at the scene before leaving.

“All we know at the moment was that the cyclists were travelling in opposite directions but we do not know why they collided.”

At 4pm on Thursday police said the man’s condition was serious but stable.
