Dance students selected for England team
The Dance World Cup will see 19 students from the Worthing area competing for England.
A team of 19 from JBS Dance has been selected from hundreds of contestants to take part in the world cup in Jersey from Saturday, June 25, to Saturday, July 2.
Worthing County Local Committee approved funding for costumes in March. A total of £1,939.53 Community Initiative Funding was granted to provide costumes and tracksuits for the Dance World Cup.
But the school needs to raise a further £2,000 to fund the trip and fundraising is now in full swing.
Principal Caroline Jenkins said: “We are thrilled to have been selected to dance for Team England and the students have been rehearsing hard every weekend to perfect their dance routines.
“This is the greatest all genre dance competition in the world for children and young adults and will be an amazing experience for these young dancers.”
The school, formally Jean Butterworth School of Dancing, is based in Glebe Road, Tarring.
One of the chosen students, 14-year-old Tegan O’Brien, said: “I am so excited to dance in front of an international jury. It’s a once in a lifetime experience.”
The Dance World Cup sees more than 12,000 competitors from 38 countries competing at country qualifiers for a place in the finals.
It is open to young people aged from four to 25 who attend a dance school that is not state run. The standard is high and group dances are encouraged so as many children as possible can participate.
JBS Dance has organised a Reach for the Stars gala evening of dance and song, hosted by the students, at the Denton Lounge, Marine Parade, Worthing, on May 26 from 7.30pm to 11pm. Tickets are £10, with children under ten free. Email [email protected] for more information.
JBS Dance offers classes for boys and girls, starting at three years old. Nursery classes exploring music and movement are followed by syllabus classes for five-year-olds upwards and vocational examinations for seniors.
