Dancing keeps centenarian ‘out of mischief’

Mr Sell partied with his Friday night dance club to celebrate, then enjoyed afternoon tea at his home last Saturday.

“Dancing keeps me out of mischief,” joked Mr Sell, of Littlehampton Road, Worthing.

He still attends two sequence dancing clubs in Worthing – Goring Retirement Club, Bury Drive, on Thursday mornings and The Labour Hall, Lyndhurst Road, on Friday evenings. He gave up East Preston Sequence Club only when he was told he had to stop driving a few months ago.

Friend Yvonne Leonard said: “Fred is a shining example of how his hobby has enabled him to maintain his fitness and social contacts, giving him a continued zest for life, proving age is just a number.”

She said he was a lively gentleman who ‘flamboyantly whisks many a lady around the floor’.

Mr Sell attributes his long, healthy life to not smoking, a habit he believes led to his twin brother ’s early death. No alchohol has passed his lips, either.

Born in Marylebone, London, on May 2, 1913, he became an apprentice welder when he left school at 14 and the peak of his career was being responsible for assembling, by hand, the body work of prestigious Rolls Royce cars.

Mr Sell has been widowed twice - his first marriage lasted more than 40 years and his second more than 30 years.
