Daytime attack in Worthing street

A MAN was punched to the ground by an attacker who tried to steal his mobile phone.

It happened in Angola Road, Worthing, at 2.30pm on Monday, February 2, as the victim walked past a man sitting on a wall outside a house.

The attacker asked the man for money, but when he said he did not have any he was threatened with being beaten up.

The would-be thief tried to grab the phone from the man, but he managed to get it back, at which point the man was punched to the ground.

Police said it was only when a passing motorist pulled over to ask what was going on, that the attacker stopped and ran off.

The victim needed stitches in his face and suffered a black eye. He was treated at the scene by paramedics.

The attacked is described as having an Eastern European accent, possibly Polish or Russian, was aged around 30 and was mixed race.

He had cropped brown hair and was wearing a leather jacket and black jeans.
