Works are being undertaken by West Sussex County Council to improve the traffic lights at Buck Barn crossroads after a rodent infestation caused ‘irreparable’ damage to the system.

Mile long delays have been reported along the dual carriageway which has been reduced to one lane in both directions due to the issue.

John Vincent, who lives in Dial Post, said driving through the area has been ‘chaos’ over the past couple of weeks.

He explained he had been forced to cancel doctors appointments and other engagements due to the delays.

He said: “Why is so much of the road being put out of commission in one lane?

“Why are the barriers so far back when the work is at the traffic lights?

“It took half an hour to move 200 yards and that was at about three in the afternoon.

“In the evenings from 5.30pm its absolute murder.”

John also raised concerns about emergency vehicles attempting to travel through the works.

He added: “How does an ambulance get through? It’s just chaos at the moment.”

A spokesman for the council explained the barriers had been set back in accordance to national guidelines.

The spokesman said: “The traffic management at Buck Barn has been set out according to national guidelines for a 50mph dual carriageway.

Emergency services were advised of the works, their duration and traffic management plans before the work started.

“We advise drivers who observe an emergency vehicle approaching from behind them to follow the advice of Sussex Police.”
