Delays continue while rodent-damaged traffic light cables are replaced

Today, traffic is being held up in both directions on the major road.

West Sussex County Council say the £500,000 project is essential because the lights are becoming unreliable, and are so old that replacement parts are getting harder to find.

“The signals are over 30 years old and a rodent infestation has caused irreparable damage to the underground cabling,” said a statement from the council.

“They will be replaced by the latest LED technology, which will improve the signals’ reliability, reduce maintenance and save energy.

“Work starts on Monday, February 29 and will last for 11 weeks, subject to the weather.

“There will be times when the A24 will be reduced to one lane in both northbound and southbound directions.

“The existing signals will stay switched on while the replacements are installed.

“However, the lights will not react as quickly, so long queues are predicted to form at all approaches to the junction.”

The council advises drivers to take other routes if possible, especially at peak times.

Other junction maintenance work is planned to go ahead while the lights are being replaced.
