Did Dr Who exterminate Worthing's swimathon?

ORGANISERS have blamed the low turnout at a charity swim marathon on the new series of Doctor Who.

Just 93 swimmers took part in Saturday's sponsored event at the Aquarena, compared with more than 200 swimmers last year.

The event raises money for the mayor's charities, which this year are West Tarring Boys' Club, Worthing Victim Support and Worthing Alzheimer's Society.

The low turnout dashes hopes of bettering last year's cash total of 6,700.

Organiser Rowland Gibson said the launch of the new series of the BBC science-fiction favourite, which began on Saturday at 7pm, was a factor in the low numbers.

He said: "You know what kids are like. They don't want to miss their Doctor Who."
