Dispelling myths on foster care

MYTHS about fostering are to be dispelled in a month-long campaign.

Fostering February is raising awareness and highlighting the fact people who are single, divorced, or homosexual can all still foster.

People don’t need to own their own home, either, the campaign points out.

The Foster Care Agency, at Riverside Business Centre, Brighton Road, Shoreham, is supporting the campaign.

Carer recruitment officer Rebecca Elsip said: “Fostering February is a campaign to create awareness around fostering, what it’s about and to dispel any myths that surround it.

“In order to help raise awareness, we are holding two open afternoons in our Shoreham office, where we would welcome anyone interested in fostering to pop in and meet us in order to understand more about becoming a foster carer.”

She said new foster carers are needed across Sussex and it was important people were properly informed on how to become one.

The agency will be able to explain what is involved and how long it could take and people will have the opportunity to ask as many questions as they like.

The campaign slogan reads: “By taking the time to ask and find out, you can honestly and truly make an amazing difference to a young person’s passage towards childhood.”

Visit the Brighton Road agency on February 12 and 19, from midday to 3pm. Visit www.thefostercareagency.org.uk or call 0808 1788 909, free from a landline, for more details.
