Don’t miss classic Rye films

Colour footage of the Queen’s 1966 visit to Rye is being shown alongside the classic black and white film Dr Syn tonight (Friday) at Rye Community Centre.

The films are being shown by Rye Film Club as an addition to its monthly programme.

When The Queen visited Rye in October 1966 the occasion was captured on film by the Rye Cine Club, using strategically placed cameras to record the royal progress, giving a rare snapshot of Rye and royalty in the 1960s.

Neale East, from the film club, said: “We are indebted to Peter Spencer for making this film available.”

It is a rare opportunity too to view the rarely seen 1937 film Dr Syn, which is influenced by smuggling in the Rye area and Romney Marsh.

The pre-war classic version of the Russell Thorndyke story stars George Arliss as Dr. Syn and a vivacious young Margaret Lockwood, in her screen debut.

Neale said: “This tale of smuggling was filmed in the local area and is always worth revisiting.”

The screening starts at 7pm. Tickets are £5 and film club membership cards will not be valid for this performance.

All profits from the screening go to St. Anthony’s church to fund urgent building repairs.
