Dr Who arrives in Bognor

Doctor When made a surprise visit to delight the pupils of a Bognor Regis school.

The mystery visitor turned up unexpectedly at South Bersted C of E Primary School in his Tardis.

He vanished as quickly as he arrived to leave the children in the classes of Emily Ellisand Michelle Robson eagerly anticipating his next visit.

One of them, six-year-old Ben Skinner, said: "Dr When was really strange with his glasses on. But I'm looking forward to him coming back.

"I also want to see what else is in the Tardis. When we went in there, we found some stones which we thought were from the dinosaurs."

The time travelling machine appeared at the Church Lane school as the classes began a history project about homes and houses.

It was initially locked to leave the children curious about its contents. They can now look inside each day to see what Dr When has brought them.

The first objects were fossils in stones. Mrs Ellis said further clues were likely to be linked to lighting - light bulbs, candles and a paraffin lamp - and other subjects through the ages.

"The children will also be doing a project linked to electricity and helping to fix Dr When's faulty Tardis," she said. "It's about being able to learn through real experience."

The authentic-looking Tardis was built by Grant Keates, of the FRH engineering company, and his oldest son and a former pupil at the school, Casey Keates.

Mr Keates's two younger children attend the school.
