Durrington parking nightmare

RESIDENTS around the new Tesco Extra in West Durrington say they had been experiencing a parking nightmare during the store's final stages of completion.

William Cock, of Hobart Close, said: "They are already causing chaos in the surrounding area by not providing parking spaces within their own boundary for both staff and tradesmen working on the site.

"We residents who live close to this development have for the past weeks been subjected to practically living in a multi-storey car park, with vehicles parked bumper to bumper in Tasman Way and the side roads off it.

"Cars and vans have been parked up on verges, diagonally across corners, blocking completely a clear view to exit.

"This new, larger store should never have been allowed to be built right in the middle of a residential area '“ it should have been built on an out-of-town, brownfield site."

Home plans

Mr Cock said if this was a taste of things to come, with the nearby 875-home development in the pipeline, he strongly urged people to get their objections in to the planning department at Worthing Council (ref. WB/04/00040/OUT).

A similar complaint came from Janet Bowers, of Adelaide Close, who said: "This is a wake-up call for us.

"This will start all over again when the big housing development starts, but that will last a lot longer than this."

A Tesco spokesman said the vast majority of the car park would be fully open.

"However, the remaining 100 car parking spaces will be built following the demolition of the old store, due to be completed within the next two months or so," he said.

"We have provided another 100 or so spaces at another, temporary location off-site, which we intend to use to provide our staff with a park-and-ride service in case there are capacity issues before the car park is fully opened."
