Durrington school still needs a hero

A Durrington school where children have to cross a '˜dangerous' road every day still needs a hero or heroine.

The Herald recently published an article about Durrington Infant and Junior School’s need for a lollipop person to help pupils cross busy Salvington Road.

Mother-of-four Jayne Melhuish is one of many worried parents: “It is quite dangerous trying to cross at the best of times but in rush hour it is nigh impossible to cross that road safely. It’s putting children at risk.

“There have been a couple of instances where children have run across the road and misjudged the trafic and cars have had to swerve to avoid them,” she added.

But despite some interest the position of lollipop person for the school remains vacant.

A spokesperson for West Sussex County Council, which pays for the position, said: “Durrington Junior School are desperate for your help. They are after a school crossing patrol to assist with the safe passage of children to and from school.”

The job involves working mornings and afternoons in term time only, and pays £7.20 per hour.
