East Worthing's disappearing cycle lane sign

NOW you see them, soon you won't!

This sign in East Worthing was put up to alert drivers of cyclists ahead '“ but it was then decided the warning was not needed after all.

The sign, at Ladydell Road's junction with Lyndhurst Road, was erected by West Sussex County Council in connection with cycle lanes being introduced on the latter road.

When the Herald pointed out there was no lane yet in existence, the council replied that this and similar signs were being covered up until the lanes were completed.

A rather hasty "paint-out" job ensued, but this was then followed by a council statement which said: "It's been decided to take down the signs.

"Now that cycle lanes are more common, such signing is less necessary.

"It's felt that more effective measures of alerting drivers to the likely presence of cyclists are available.

"The signs will be re-used elsewhere, when appropriate."
