Eastern European shops targeted in food alert

Speciality Eastern European food shops in Bognor Regis are being visited by environmental health officers.

The visits to the delis and supermarkets follow the recall of multiple food products on safety grounds.

The Food Standards Agency has issued an alert after JSC 'Samsonas', of Kaunas in Lithuania, recalled from sale all 'Samsono' brand meat products because of the possibility of contamination with listeria monocytogenes.

It follows the recall of all 'Samsono' ear and tongue rolls last month after high levels of the potentially harmful bacteria were discovered in the product.

The harmful bacteria listeria monocytogenes can cause the disease listeriosis.

Healthy adults are likely to experience only mild infection, causing flu-like symptoms or gastroenteritis.

However, listeria infection can occasionally lead to severe blood poisoning (septicaemia) or meningitis.
