Elderly throw wellington boots in contest

The event at the Rectory House, West Street, Sompting on March 1 saw residents hurl wellington boots as far as they could.

There was no outright winner as the competitors were laughing too much for a champion thrower to be declared.

After the competition, residents enjoyed some well-deserved Welsh cakes and a cup of tea.

Care home manager Scarlett Macdonald said: “We like to organise a range of activities at Rectory House for our residents to take part in.

“This was a fun activity which created a lot of laughter, the residents definitely enjoyed themselves.”

The Welly Wanging World Championships are held each year in Holmfirth, Wales.

It is believed that welly wanging originated in the town after a pint of ale was accidently spilt into a resident’s welly.

Rectory House is run by the family-owned Caring Homes Group, which was founded in 1994 by mother and son team, Helena and Paul Jeffery.

The care home provides residential and nursing support for up to 41 people and the surrounding grounds provide the perfect setting in which residents can learn new hobbies or maintain existing ones.
