End to Goring Gap boy racers' anti-social motoring

GORING Gap boy racers are getting the "chequered flag" to spoil their anti-social motoring.

West Sussex County Council is imposing a driving ban at the northern end of Bodiam Avenue, in The Plantation area, and it is being brought into effect as soon as possible.

Worthing County Local Committee was told at a recent meeting that five roads were used as a "figure of eight" impromptu race track.

They are Amberley Drive, Marine Drive, Glynde Avenue, Bodiam Avenue and Aldsworth Avenue.

Night racing

These roads were also used for other forms of anti-social driving, mostly at night.

The committee discussed several options, including closing roads to form cul-de-sacs.

But they were told roads within the Goring Gap provided an important amenity for the wider community with many learner drivers (cars, motorcycles and bicycles) starting their lessons on the "relatively safe and quiet roads".

It was also heard they provided essential overspill parking for local sport and walking activities, which generally took place during daylight.

So it was important to retain the highways aspect of the roads, even with limited access.

The report ended: "It is believed the improvement to the safety of all road users and the surrounding community will mitigate any likely Human Rights Act implications."

What do you think?

Have you been disturbed by night races at Goring Gap?

How much of a problem are young drivers in the area?
