An end to seaside toilet saga?
A seaside public toilet that has long frustrated residents is to be fixed, following enquiries by the Worthing Herald.
The public facility in Goring seafront, near Eirene Road, was provided as part of the agreement to develop the land.
However, despite reopening after being closed for several months earlier this year, the toilet was still provoking the ire of people at the seafront this week.
“This has been a shambles from day one,” said Goring beach hut owner Jonathan Davidson, 66. He described how he had to use a 2p coin to rescue somebody who could not get out.
“When the wind catches the door it is just banging back and forward,” he added, reporting that residents had taken to placing a rock in front of the door to keep it shut.
“I call it an art installation on the sea front because that is all it is.”
The toilet and the development are managed by Chamonix Estates.
Speaking to the Worthing Herald yesterday, September 27, the company’s director, Adrian Povey, said he had not been aware of the issue but would immediately take steps to resolve it.
Later that day Mr Povey confirmed that a contractor had been down to inspect the facility and found that the door had been clogged with grit which prevented it from locking properly.
Mr Povey said the contractor was able to clean out the grit and the door could now be locked properly from the inside.
Additionally he said the door frame was found to be warped, which was contributing to the door being caught in the wind, a problem which could be repaired in the next week.
“Hopefully it will be an easy one to fix,” he added.
