Run by Worthing and District Society of Model Engineers in conjunction with Worthing Leisure, the two three-day courses at Field Place, Worthing, were designed to introduce youngsters to steam power and live miniature steam engines.

The students each constructed an electric powered model car from balsa wood, using a drill machine to construct various metal components.

On the final day, they were able to drive a selection of 5” gauge live steam trains and an electrically-powered diesel locomotive.

They were supervised throughout the courses by experienced engineers from the society, many of which have retired, having had long careers in engineering. The society also has members who once drove the full- size steam engines of yesteryear.

The three day courses are held every year during the early part of August and are booked through Worthing Leisure.
