The £250,000 screen, which filters unflushable items, has been replaced at East Worthing Treatment Works.

It has captured over 400 tonnes of waste material, from everyday items like wet wipes to mobile phones, false teeth and even wedding rings,at the Southern water site located north of Brooklands Lake.

Rob Lawless, Southern Water Project Manager, said: “At 45-feet it is one of Southern Water’s tallest screens and seeing it craned into position is quite an impressive sight.

“Once in place it protects the treatment processes from being damaged by a number of unflushable items ranging face wipes and sanitary items, to mobile phones, false teeth and wedding rings.

“We would like to remind customers that the wastewater network is only designed to carry the three Ps – pee, poo and paper.”

In one year, the two screens at the site filtered out a mass of waste material equivalent to the weight of 80 elephants.

One of the two screens at the site is replaced every year, as part of a maintenance programme. The removed screen is cleaned up, refurbished and kept as a spare.
