Arundel Community Clean Up Day: in pictures

Arundel is looking spick and span after the community rallied together.

Tying in with the Great British September Clean, Arundel’s Community Clean Up Day, held on September 18, was hailed as a big success by the town council.

Blessed by perfect weather, nine members of engineering company Mackley, who were based in Arundel carrying out a scheme to reduce the risk of flooding and erosion, and more than 30 residents including Arundel Town councillors, collected litter and cut weeds.

Mackley lent two licenced strimmers for the day to tackle the town’s verges. In the meantime, pupils of Saint Philip’s Catholic Primary School in London Road, Arundel, did a clean-up of their school grounds with ‘enormous enthusiasm’, the council said.

The most surprising find of the day was a nine-kilo transparent bag of wax balls for candle making, which will be donated to Arundel Youth Club, closely followed by a number of unopened beer cans at the south end of London Road.

The council said they had kept the event low-key because of the pandemic, but there were lots of offers to volunteer at the next event in spring 2021.

A council spokesman thanked everyone for their help, particularly town councillor Angela Standing and town clerk Carolyn Baynes for their ‘excellent organisation of the day’.

David Knapp, Mackley’s business development manager, said: “We are committed to working in partnership with the people who live and work in the areas where we operate, and support a wide range of local charities and community initiatives. I’m delighted that so many of our employees were able to support such a worthwhile initiative, cleaning up a town they have become so familiar with.”
