West Sussex Highways is providing low-energy, LED lighting at Gardners Footbridge, which links Eastbrook Way and Old Barn Way.

The move comes after a request from residents for better lighting, which was supported by local county councillors.

The scheme is designed to illuminate the steps and bridge to help pedestrians see better and feel safer at night.

As there are no nearby alternative routes for pedestrians, the footbridge will be open while the lighting is installed and work areas will be kept safe for passers-by.

A West Sussex Highways spokesperson said: “People using the footbridge will be given advice and may be guided past the work area by the contractor but are also asked to please take extra care there while the project is ongoing.”

The project is planned to start on 8 October, the county council said.

It is scheduled to take two weeks, subject to factors such as severe weather.

The works will be undertaken by SSE Contracting and are expected to cost £20,000.

They are being funded from the county council’s Community Highway Schemes budget.

The steel footbridge, which replaced a reinforced concrete bridge when it reached the end of its life-span, was installed in 2007.
