Shoreham Beach boardwalk extension complete and open to public

The walkway was extended eastwards this summer to link it up with the West Sussex County Council-owned footpath at Forthaven.

It has opened up the beach to people with mobility issues, particularly those with disabilities and parents and guardians with pushchairs, the council said.

Winding through the local nature reserve from The Burrells roundabout to Shoreham Fort, the 1.2 kilometre walk passes through a rare habitat hosting such plants as Yellow Horned Poppy, Sea Kale and Curled Dock.

Councillor David Simmons, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “It’s very exciting to see the boardwalk extension completed and being widely used by people who find getting around difficult and rely on wheelchairs, as well as young families with pushchairs and those suffering from other disabilities.

“It is a real joy to see so many people enjoying this facility and the conservation area which extends along the beach adjacent to the boardwalk.”

Chairman of Adur District Council, Joss Loader, who is also district councillor for the Beach, said: “We are very lucky to have such a beautiful stretch of beach which is also environmentally important.

“I am particularly pleased that Adur District Council is honouring its pledge to open up the beach to as many people as possible – particularly those who would normally struggle to negotiate the shingle, due to mobility issues.

“It’s great to see so many people enjoying the boardwalk.”

The latest stretch of the boardwalk is the third phase of an Adur District Council-funded project linking Shoreham Fort with Ferry Road.
