Shoreham pupils plant trees to help save the planet

Children from a Shoreham school have planted 18 trees in their local park after learning how important they are for the environment. Around 30 year-six pupils from Buckingham Park Primary School joined a team from Tree Action UK on Friday for the tree planting.

Volunteer Chloe Chow, a Forest School teacher, gave a short talk about chestnut trees before the children helped to plant 18 sweet chestnut saplings in Buckingham Park. The saplings were supplied by More Trees Please, a project launched by Chris Platt in Shoreham last winter to help tackle the climate crisis. Ricky Purnell, event co-ordinator for Tree Action, said: “Keith Walder, a ranger from Adur and Worthing councils’ environment team, showed them the process of planting and what they needed to do, and then they got into groups of three and away they went. The job was done in less than two hours.”

It is hoped the children can be involved in checking up on the trees as they grow and report back to the district council on their condition. They may also be able to help with basic weeding and tending until the trees are established. Nathan Hollisey-McLean, assistant head at Buckingham Park Primary, said: “It was a brilliant morning and the children absolutely loved it.”
