Even more women can join local Race for Life

EVEN more women can take part in Worthing’s Race for Life this summer following the success of last year’s event.

The Cancer Research UK Race for Life 5k will set off from Steyne Gardens at 11am on Sunday, July 15.

Event organisers are urging mums, daughters, sisters, grandmas and friends to sign up to the race, held in partnership with Tesco, as soon as possible.

Jemma Molloy, Cancer Research UK’s south east events manager, said: “Come on, ladies – please enter Race for Life in Worthing today. It’s all of us versus cancer and we need you to join the fight as soon as possible.”

Last year, 3,000 women took part in the Worthing race and raised £185,368. This year, organisers want 3,500 women and girls to put their best foot forward and help raise £193,964 for vital research.

Cancer affects 41,000 people in the South East every year.

Jemma added: “We are very grateful to everyone who took part in Race for Life in Worthing last year and in the past. Thanks to them, Cancer Research UK has been able to fund much-needed research. But the battle against cancer never stops and for this reason we need them to return to the fight in 2012 and bring new recruits with them.”

Jemma said women should not worry if they think they are not fit enough to take part.

She said: “We want to reassure them that Race for Life is not about being fast or fit. Instead, it’s a celebration of sisterhood and hope.

“Women can choose whether to walk, jog or run the 5k route. Most are able to walk 5k in an hour. All women are welcome, regardless of whether they are taking part on their own or as part of a group.”
