Extra patrols in Tarring after spate of van thefts

Tarring has seen five vans targeted last week, with numerous power tools stolen between Saturday, August 2 and the following Monday.

The offences took place in St Andrews Road, Rectory Road, Westlake Close and Highdown Avenue. A number of tools were stolen from each vehicle including various drills and drill bits, power saws, grinders and nail guns.

There was no sign of forced entry to any of the vehicles.

PCSO Ben Cruise, of the Adur and Worthing Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Please make it as difficult as possible for these people to get into your vehicle. Always make sure to leave your vehicle secure and check that it has locked properly.

“It is always best to remove your tools from your van overnight and store them somewhere safe.

“If this isn’t possible, are you able to fit a lockable cage to the inside of your van as an added layer of security? After market locks are available which can be fitted to the doors to help make them more secure and tamper proof.”

PCSOs have been carrying out additional patrols in the area and contacting residents with vans to make them aware of these incidents.

Local businesses have supported getting this message out to the local community by displaying posters with security advice on.

PCSO Cruise added: ““I would also like to take this opportunity to remind residents to report all incidents as soon as possible, via 999, if you see a theft taking place, or via email [email protected] phone 101 if you discover it later.

“This will maximise our chances of retrieving forensic evidence.

“Over the next few weeks, look out for officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team and volunteers from Neighbourhood Watch at events offering crime prevention advice as well as information on immobilise and how this can help keep your valuables safe.”
