A WORTHING couple celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary alongside family and friends.
John and Margaret Oecken booked a room and the Windsor Hotel where they shared memories of their 60 year marriage with 55 guests.
The former teachers. who have five children, 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, still see each other everyday despite Mrs Oecken, 88, living at Pentland’s Nursing Home.
They were married in the coronation year on August 18, 1953 at St Columba’s Presbyterian Church.
Mr Oecken, 86, of Rose Walk, Worthing, said: “I first met Margaret when I was clipping her mother’s hedge. I was working with her at Broadwater Manor at the prep school and she needed her hedge cutting.
“I had seen Margaret before but we met properly then and that was it.
“We were both teachers, me secondary and she primary but we were very happy. She is always right and she knows better than I do. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow and do what your wife says.”
The couple have been members of the congregation of Emmanuel United Reform Church, Worthing for many years and John has been a member of the Rotary Club of Worthing for twenty nine years. They were delighted to receive a card from the Queen.
