Simon and Liz Turner, and their children, Georgia and Jack, were returning to Simon’s parents’ house in Salvington when they noticed the cat atop the post office in George V Avenue.

The family, from Yatton, in Somerset, had stopped to use a cash point and heard the cat meowing, while a small group of people looked on.

Initially, Simon said he did not think much of it and the family continued on to Uncle Sam’s in Strand Parade, Goring, for a bite to eat. While there, Simon saw an advert for the Findon-based PAWS Animal Sanctuary in a magazine, prompting him to return to the stranded feline.

Georgia, 14, was the first to act, shimmying up a lamp- post to reach the roof of the post office, before she was joined by her dad.

Simon, 46, said: “Most cats just get down of their own accord but this cat sounded distressed.

“The cat was scared out of its wits, backed into a corner and looked like it was going to leap. The drop was about 20 feet.”
