Family of man killed on A24 host fundraiser

But it will not be just a way to mark great-grandfather Don Lock’s memory, more importantly the sculpture is hoped to inspire people to live their lives to the fullest.

Don’s son Andrew, 49, told the Herald: “It will be a celebration of living life. It’s making people think about getting out there and enjoying life.”

Don Lock’s granddaughter, Carly Goodlad, 29, has been the main driving force behind organising the fundraiser on Sunday, attracting the interest of hundreds of local businesses.

She said: “It’s just to help us and the community to remember him.

“The amount of people I’ve met who have worked with him, or met with him, or knew him and it’s amazing how many people already knew him, so it’s not just for us.”

Andrew said: “It’s amazing just how many people he touched in his life without us even knowing it.”

Don was a member of Worthing Excelsior Cycling Club in Broadwater Street and was the writer of the club’s magazine Worthing Wheel for more than 30 years.

Every back copy of the magazine is available at Worthing Library after the family donated the collection.

“Dad, without realising it, was supportive to so many people, especially in the cycling world, and in the club a lot of people referred to him as a legend,” he said.

Worthing and Adur Council has agreed to a public sculpture in Broadwater, in principle.

Andrew said he is in talks with a member of the club who is also a stonemason.

He said: “We’re in the process of going through the necessary details with the council to finalise it.”

It is hoped the sculpture will be located close to the cycling club at the Broadwater Parish Rooms and his former place of work, Miller Parris, where he was a legal executive for more than 40 years.

On Sunday, the community is invited to go along to The Smugglers Return in Ham Road, Worthing, where an auction with more than 30 products, vouchers and experiences will be auctioned off by Ian Hart, of Ian Hart Funeral Services.

Items up for grabs include a t-shirt signed by Olympic cycling competitors Team Sky, £100 Quest Bike store voucher, £50 worth of restaurant gift cards, and much more.

There will also be a raffle with a chance to win two Dome Cinema tickets, a beauty massage and £30 Morrisons vouchers, among 30 other prizes.

Carly said she had been overwhelmed by the support of the community and local businesses following an appeal she put out on social media.

“They have been amazing, I cannot thank them enough. I thought I would just put the idea out there at first and it’s gone absolutely crazy,” she said.

The event starts at the pub at 3pm and all are welcome to attend.
