Ferring gardeners step up to challenge

Warm summer weather provided a challenge for Ferring Horticultural Society members this year.

But they produced a beautiful display of flowers, garden produce and floral arrangements for their summer flower show on Saturday, bringing praise from judge Paul Dalby.

Sheilah Smith’s superb Annabelle hydrangea received the Gilligan Bowl for best in show and Peter Clear won the WHR Cup for most points in show.

Linda Fryar won both the Garden Flowers Cup and the Rose Cup in her first year of exhibiting, which was a great achievement.

Other cup winners included Elizabeth Green, Gladys Butler Cup for floral art; Kathryn Stillman, Butler Cup for mixed garden flowers; Jim Gray, Adpar-Jones Cup for one single rose; Martin Ford, Gladiolus Cup; Gordon Welch, Sweet Pea Cup; Marylin Collis, Hanging Basket Cup and a contender for best in show; and Gary Hicks, Fruit Cup.

In the homecraft section, Sheila Barker won the Williamson Cup for her mocha cake. Sue Rayner gained first place for her jam, Doreen Teale was first for shortbread fingers and Kathryn Stillman was first for flapjacks.

Other first place winners were Mrs W. Peters, Mrs V. Clarke, Mrs A Fisher, Mr R. Dumbleton, Mr J Collis, Mr J. Franklin, Mrs M. Metcalf, Mr J. Clarke, Mr R. Wilde, Mr R. Norton-Wight, Mrs D. Dumbleton, Mrs G. Ford, Mrs G. Klemenz and Mrs J. Warren.

There was brisk business in the tea room with a mouth-watering selection of homemade cakes, where Jennie’s Jams was raising money for the NSPCC, together with a jewellery stall.
