A jury convicted Dean Paddock, 56, of ten counts of sexually abusing a girl under the age of 13 at Lewes Crown Court, following a ten day trial.

These included four rapes and six sexual assaults, committed against the same victim over a period of three years.

Paddock, of Langbury Lane, Ferring, had pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him.

In addition to his prison sentence, Paddock was also made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order and placed on the sex offenders’ register.

After the trial, Detective Constable Rebecca Hazzard, of the force’s child protection team, said: “This was one of the most complex and harrowing cases of sexual abuse I have ever investigated.

“The long custodial sentence imposed on Paddock reflected the gravity of the crimes committed.”

Det Con Hazzard hoped it would show other victims of sexual abuse that it was worthwhile coming forward to police, and she encouraged them to do so.
