Festival princess selected

PREPARATIONS for the ‘bigger and better’ Ashington Festival are gathering steam with the selection of the carnival’s princess.

Nine year old Daisy Richardson will lead the procession on August 16, after being picked in the random draw.

Daisy will be joined by attendants Isabella Aegisdottir and Lyndsey Lee, both five, and Alfie Price, six, Jacob Lee, eight, and Julian Seymour, nine.

The carnival procession starts at 1.30pm, starting in Foster Lane, before entertainment on the field.

Organiser Margaret Alford said: “The 2014 Ashington Festival is going to be even bigger and better than last year and we’ve been working hard to pack even more in.

“We’re delighted to have many more floats and walking groups registered for the carnival, which will once again finish on the field.

“We have many new acts, as well as some returning ones, and we’ll be adding even more new attractions as we get closer to the day.”

Harris Brothers Funfair will be making a return, with other activities including a fun dog show, car boot sale, flower show, custom cars, craft, charity and animal stalls.

Food outlets will range from Thai, pizzas, crepes and ice cream, while there will also be a licensed bar and a Pimms and prosecco bar.

Britain’s Got Talent comedian Drew Cameron will make a guest appearance, alongside bands such as The Silver Beatles and Curves Aloud.

Mrs Alford said: “We all look forward to seeing you all at the festival in what we hope will be a fantastic and hopefully dry day.”
