Firefighter selected for epic 100 Peaks Challenge
Arundel firefighter Tony Day has been selected for the epic 100 Peaks Challenge.
Tony, chief executive of Bear Kustoms Paintworks and a retained firefighter known as ‘Bear’, will compete in the extreme triathlon in support of two British military charities, ABF The Soldiers Charity and Support Our Paras.
The unique event will take place between May 23 and June 16 , 2017, in Scotland, England, the Isle of Man and Wales, with organisers aiming to raise £100,000.
Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who is endorsing the challenge, said: “The 100 Peaks Challenge will be an exceptional endurance event testing both the physical and mental fitness and resilience of those taking part.
“This, with the logistics of attempting to summit 100 peaks in four countries in 25 days, means it’s a first.
“It’s quite possibly the most demanding endurance challenge ever staged in the UK. When I first heard about this challenge, I was keen to support it.”
The challenge involves ascending 100 peaks over 2,000 feet in 25 days, as well as cycling and kayaking between the mountains, to include a crossing of the Irish Sea from mainland Britain to the Isle of Man and back.
By the end, Tony will have covered 8.6 times the height of Mount Everest, cycled 13.5 times the cycle distance of Ironman and walked 72.3 times the marathon distance.
The 100 Peaks Challenge has been arranged by Karl Rushen following his appointment as a #GetOutside champion by Ordnance Survey. It will be in memory of his brother Lloyd Newell, who was killed in action in Afghanistan while serving in the Special Air Service.
Karl said: “It was with immense pride that I was selected to be an Ordnance Survey #GetOutside Champion in the first instance, but for them as an organisation to want to support what The 100 Peaks Challenge hopes to achieve, and back those efforts is beyond words.
“It is, in every sense, humbling. It kick starts the challenge effort in the best possible way and we look forward to them being a major part of the success of this project.”
The OS #GetOutside campaign came after research revealed that a quarter of the British population will not walk anywhere for more than 15 minutes. It was launched to inspire people from all walks of life and all ages and abilities to spend a little more time outside their four walls.
