Firefighters to strengthen collaboration with St John Ambulance

The training day will be held on Saturday (March 4)

The day will focus on road traffic collisions (RTCs), with sessions covering general information such as the role of the fire service at an RTC and the collaboration of emergency services on scene.

The day will also include knowledge-sharing sessions on handling casualties affected by a collision and releasing them from damaged vehicles.

Andy Packham, Crew Manager at Worthing Fire Station, said: “We are always working to prevent incidents from occurring in the first place through different schemes and campaigns. Unfortunately, RTCs still make up a large number of the incidents that the emergency services attend.

“We have organised this session to help share expertise and knowledge between our organisations, with the aim that the working collaboration between ourselves, SECAmb and St John Ambulance will only become stronger as a result.”

The sessions will be a mixture of theoretical discussions and practical demonstrations, with the St John Ambulance personnel split into groups for various scenarios. Paramedic trainers from SECAmb and St John Ambulance will also be assisting throughout the day.

Trevor Moss, District manager at St John Ambulance, said: “We really appreciate the opportunity for our volunteers to work alongside our local firefighters.

“There is always the chance that our crews are required to assist in the releasing of patients from an RTC; this session will give them the opportunity to practice their life saving first aid skills and to understand the role each emergency service has and how we can all work together.”
