First ‘Cashmob’ event is ‘great for local business’

AN EVENT which aims to raise awareness of small businesses has unearthed a gem in the town centre.

The “Cashmob”, held on Saturday, brought together over 20 people, who pledged to spend at least £5 in a mystery shop.

Run by Worthing-based artist Dan Thompson, 38, of Tower Road, Worthing, the chosen shop was The Flea Market, in Bath Place, Worthing.

Mr Thompson said the event went “better than expected”.

He said: “It was far better than I expected. We got a really good turnout.”

“Everyone spent a fiver and we spent a total of £107.”

On the day, a wide variety of items were snapped-up, ranging from CDs to a leather jacket.

Mr Thompson explained the shop was chosen as it was relatively unknown to those taking part.

He said: “It’s is a shop that not a lot of people know about, or aware is there.

“It has a lot of stuff, from records to clothes, so everybody can go in there and spend a fiver.”

The event was the first of its kind in the town, although several similar events have taken place across the country.

Dan said: “The shop was really pleased and a lot of people said they were going to go back.

“It was clearly a hit and it was great for local business.”

The next “Cashmob” is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 22, meeting at Café 33, in Warwick Street, Worthing, at 11am.

It will be held at a different shop, in order to spread trade across a variety of independent traders.
